Description

This course highlights the spirit in African American writing, from the fiery rhetoric of abolitionists to the powerful prose and poetry of modern/contemporary authors. Students will examine how literature embodies both religious faith and the fight for freedom and justice. Writers will include, but not limited to, Frederick Douglas, James Baldwin, Toni Morrison, Maya Angelou, Langston Hughes, Martin Luther King Jr., Howard Thurman, James Cone, William Barber, and Ta-Nehisi Coates. Meets General Education Categories Collaborative Learning, III.B or IV.B (pre-2025); Interdisciplinary Thinking, Literary Thinking, Ethics, Justice, & Social Action (2025+).
