It is the policy of Brevard College to either recycle or properly dispose of electronic equipment in an effort to protect the campus community and general environment from the potentially hazardous materials contained in certain electronic equipment components.
Reason for Policy/Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to establish general procedures for the classification, disposal, and recycling of unwanted electronic equipment at the campus of Brevard College in accordance with the National Recycling Coalition’s Electronics Recycling Initiative and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations (40 CFR 261).

Faculty, staff and students
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) currently classifies discarded electronic equipment containing lead, mercury, and cadmium as characteristic hazardous waste under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). As such, electronic equipment should not be discarded in the trash, even if it is unbroken or unusable. For the purposes of this policy, electronic equipment waste is identified as the following: Computers, computer monitors, televisions, VCR and DVD players, copiers and printers, fax machines, cordless phones and cell phones.
In order to properly dispose/recycle electronic wastes, the College coordinates with Goodwill Industries of Northwest North Carolina, a member of RECONNECT (a service managed by Dell and Goodwill), for EPA compliant recycling. RECONNECT will properly dispose of the equipment and provide the College documentation to support the asset disposition.
The College coordinates the removal of electronic equipment waste. If you encounter electronic equipment you wish to dispose, you must contact the IT Department and request a Asset Disposal Form.
After completing the form, submit a work ticket to the IT Helpdesk requesting removal of the equipment so that it may be properly discarded or recycled.
This policy enforces the procedures set forth in the Electronic Equipment Recycling Plan, available from the IT Department or Stan Jacobsen.

Recycling of Electronic Items
If you have electronic equipment that you do not want, or that no longer has any value, it can be disposed of through the College’s Electronic Equipment Recycling Program.
Steps for Recycling:
1. All electronic equipment that contains sensitive data or software owned by the College, such as personal computers and laptops, must be reformatted to remove all information. The equipment must be evaluated by IT for confidential data or reuse in the college.
2. Go to the IT Helpdesk Website and fill out a work request. State the number of electronic items to be re-cycled along with the building and room number where they are to be picked up. IT will coordinate a collection date and time with you.
3. IT will complete the Change in Fixed Asset Status Form for each piece of equipment and return completed forms to the Office of Business and Finance.
