Description
This course will investigate movements in music and philosophy in continental Europe from the mid-nineteenth to mid-twentieth centuries, with a focus on thematic parallels: from Romanticism to minimalism, nihilism, absurdism, and the disintegration of meaning. Composers to be explored include Wagner, Stravinsky, Schnberg, Satie, and Cage; philosophical literature includes works by Turgenev, Dostoevsky, Nietzsche, Camus, and theatre of the absurd.
