Description

Borrowing its title from the classic work by W.E.B. Du Bois, this course offers an introduction to literary and religious expressions of African American culture in the United States, placing particular emphasis (as did Du Bois) on the roles played by story and song. The class will include readings from black American authors, visits to and guest speakers from local African American churches, and explorations of music--from slave songs and spirituals to gospel hymns and the freedom of the Civil Rights Movement. Meets General Education Distribution Area III.B or IV.B.
