This course begins with a look at the history of formal education in ancient Greece before moving forward through the rise of the University in Europe, the exporting of European education systems to the Americas, the rise of public education in the United States, shifts in US higher education after
the GI Bill, and current debates about alternatives to public education including charter schools and voucher programs.
